5 Tips for Finding a Home in a Safe Neighborhood

There are a number of ways to find a home in a safe neighborhood, because, let’s face it, in today’s modern world some communities can get a little hairy. Whether it’s because of a low economical status or a major source of job creation has closed, some of our neighborhoods that we once knew and loved are now places we’ll never step foot again. And if you want to start a family or find a nice, quiet community to settle down in, it is important to find a neighborhood where you don’t need to install bars on your windows, a bank style security system and multiple locks on the door. Here are 5 tips for finding a home in a safe neighborhood.

  1. Your best bet in finding out if a neighborhood is safe, is to do the research. If you have found the perfect home in a particular community, make sure to look online and read the crime reports, statistics and even news stories. Most communities have their own specific kind of crimes, like gang or drug activity. You can usually find a wealth of information online to find out if the community is on an upswing or has multiple years left before it is deemed safe to live in.
  2. Next, you want to make sure that the community has enough emergency response presence. Find out how close the police station is and how many and how often the police patrol a specific neighborhood. You also want to make sure that there is fire station nearby in case of a fire. Emergency response is usually a sign of a community that cares about the people that lives in it.
  3. Another way to find out if a neighborhood is safe is to check the local school system. Find out what the test scores are like and how it compares to other schools in the country. A good education is a great way to find out if a community is safe, because it shows that they care about future generations. Plenty of downtrodden neighborhoods usually have poor school systems.
  4. And, whether your are searching Katy homes for sale or three bedroom townhouses in Kansas City, you want to find out what the local economy is like. Is there is a strong main street with plenty of local commerce or a number of businesses with boards on their windows? A community that has a sluggish economy usually breeds crime, because people are more desperate, which can cause a domino effect of sorts.
  5. Lastly, you can always visit the neighborhood and ask people questions. Sometimes you will be able to tell if a community is dangerous just by driving through it. Moreover, a neighborhood can go from good to bad and even to worse in less than five years. In this instance, it is important to actually make an in person visit, because you might get different accounts from different sources. Most of all, you can usually tell right off the bat if a community will be right for you and your family.
