Home Security Guide: Tips to Thwart Thieves

Some effective methods used in home security cost very little. Half of all burglars enter without force. If it takes time to pry something open, most burglars give up. Locking up securely pays off.

Most burglaries occur when you are at work between 10 and 3 p.m. Most entries are made through UNLOCKED doors and windows. Common entry points are; garage doors, back doors and windows - places not easily seen.

Most burglars head straight for your master bed room where most of you keep your valuables.

The typical house burglar is a male teenager who lives within one or two miles from your house. Most burglars are crimes of opportunity. We can do something to decrease those opportunities.

Stretchable silicon could be next wave in electronics

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a fully stretchable form of single-crystal silicon with micron-sized, wave-like geometries that can be used to build high-performance electronic devices on rubber substrates.

“Stretchable silicon offers different capabilities than can be achieved with standard silicon chips,” said John Rogers, a professor of materials science and engineering and co-author of a paper to appear in the journal Science, as part of the Science Express Web site, on Dec 15.

Functional, stretchable and bendable electronics could be used in applications such as sensors and drive electronics for integration into artificial muscles or biological tissues, structural monitors wrapped around aircraft wings, and conformable skins for integrated robotic sensors, said Rogers, who is also a Founder Professor of Engineering, a researcher at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and a member of the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory.

To create their stretchable silicon, the researchers begin by fabricating devices in the geometry of ultrathin ribbons on a silicon wafer using procedures similar to those used in conventional electronics. Then they use specialized etching techniques to undercut the devices. The resulting ribbons of silicon are about 100 nanometers thick — 1,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.

In the next step, a flat rubber substrate is stretched and placed on top of the ribbons. Peeling the rubber away lifts the ribbons off the wafer and leaves them adhered to the rubber surface. Releasing the stress in the rubber causes the silicon ribbons and the rubber to buckle into a series of well-defined waves that resemble an accordion.

“The resulting system of wavy integrated device elements on rubber represents a new form of stretchable, high-performance electronics,” said Young Huang, the Shao Lee Soo Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. “The amplitude and frequency of the waves change, in a physical mechanism similar to an accordion bellows, as the system is stretched or compressed.”

As a proof of concept, the researchers fabricated wavy diodes and transistors and compared their performance with traditional devices. Not only did the wavy devices perform as well as the rigid devices, they could be repeatedly stretched and compressed without damage, and without significantly altering their electrical properties.

“These stretchable silicon diodes and transistors represent only two of the many classes of wavy electronic devices that can be formed,” Rogers said. “In addition to individual devices, complete circuit sheets can also be structured into wavy geometries to enable stretchability.”

Besides the unique mechanical characteristics of wavy devices, the coupling of strain to electronic and optical properties might provide opportunities to design device structures that exploit mechanically tunable, periodic variations in strain to achieve unusual responses.

In addition to Rogers and Huang, co-authors of the paper were postdoctoral researcher Dahl-Young Khang and research scientist Hanqing Jiang. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy funded the work.

Many Computer Users Lack Basic Security Precautions

Cybersecurity efforts in the U.S. government and many businesses are improving, but many individual computer users still don’t take basic precautions against cyberattacks, cybersecurity experts said Thursday.

More than 90 percent of computer users surveyed recently on behalf of Symantec have antivirus software installed and updated and 82 percent have antispyware protection, said Adam Rak, Symantec’s senior director of public affairs. But only 42 percent of computer users who allowed Symantec to scan their computers had firewalls installed and enabled, only 50 percent had antiphishing protections installed and 58 percent had antispam protections, Rak said during an event to mark the beginning of the fifth annual National Cyber Security Month.

Home and Personal Security - What You Need to Know

If you live in a reasonably safe area you think it could never happen to you-someone braking into you home. Most likely it won’t ever happen, but just like with the lottery, you never really know where lightening will strike. If it does happen, there are few things more devastating than a violation of one’s home. Our home is our castle and if we can’t feel safe and rely on security there, where can we?

Unfortunately, crime happens. There’s a burglary somewhere in the United States every 15 seconds and a property crime every three seconds. Add to that a couple of motor vehicle thefts every minute and an appalling number of violent crimes and you see that we’re not quite as protected as we think we are, and that applies even to home security in safe neighborhoods.

There is no need to live life in fear, but it does make sense to reduce your odds of becoming the victim of a crime. There are a number of ways to deter burglars and make your home an undesirable target. Keeping a crime from happening is far preferable to dangerous self-defense heroics, or having to deal with the often-devastating consequences of a robbery or crime. But how do you go about making your home safer?

The cardinal rule is making robbing your home as time-consuming and risky as possible. Robbers and criminals like to operate unobserved and in the dark. They like to pick on easy targets where they can quickly hit and run. Make that impossible, and you have just decreased the likelihood of a break-in and increased your and your kids’ safety.

Start with the obvious: Always lock your windows and doors. Make sure you have locks that cannot easily be broken. Then move on to proper lighting. Install motion-triggered exterior spotlights and other types of motion-activated alarms. Consider adding security cameras. Those should be obvious enough to make a burglar believe he’s being recorded. Even dummy cameras can work as a deterrent! Security and spy cameras come in many shapes and forms, from very obvious to totally hidden.

If you are gone a lot, install automated lighting systems that illuminate the home in a random fashion to make it look lived in. You may also consider random dog barking systems (no burglar likes to encounter an angry Doberman once he gets in). If you keep valuables in your home, consider diversion safes to hide things in (some look like soda cans, spray bottles, etc.).

Some people keep guns in their homes whereas others are opposed to that. Either way, if you are concerned about self-defense, it makes sense to consider things like pepper spray or stun guns. Both are small and handy, and will disable an attacker rather than injure him (which, sadly, can lead to legal issues!). Today’s stun guns are very small and inexpensive so they can be stowed away or carried around even in purses. Pepper sprayers also come in a variety of small packages and they cost very little. Though we all hope we never have to use them, both provide a means of self-defense and security.

Are You Really Safe From a Home Invasion?

This article is provided by 101homesecurity.com.A home invasion is basically a robbery that occurs when you and your family are at home. Since the majority of people do not arm their alarm systems when they are active in their homes, thieves or assailants know that they can take as much time as they want once they have broken into your home. Less than three Kicks and one minute is all it takes to break through the average residential door secured with a deadbolt. That is why thieves kick in doors to gain entry in more than 50% of all home burglaries. Home invasion is frightening when you consider that your family (as well as your possessions) is the target. More frightening still is the fact that occurrences of home invasions are on the rise.
The FBI says every 12 seconds a home is invaded by going right through the front or back door.In 2005, law enforcement agencies reported an estimated 2,154,126 burglary offenses a 0.5-percent increase compared with 2004 data. Burglary accounted for 21.2 percent of the estimated number of property crimes committed in 2005. Of all burglary offenses in 2005, 65.8 percent were residential structures. Most (62.4 percent) of residential burglaries in 2005 for which time of occurrence was known took place during the day,
