Finding and Destroying Hidden Problem Odors

The sources of most problem home odors are easy to spot, such as the overflowing trashcan, old sneakers, or the family dog that is overdue for a bath. However, having mystery smells in one’s home can be quite frustrating, particularly when an exhaustive search proves to be fruitless. While locating the source of the odor is important, using ozone generators is one way to ensure that even your hidden odors are eliminated. Here are a few common “hidden” problem odors and how to get rid of their source:

Permanent Odor Removal

Finding the source of a problem odor and cleaning it is often not enough to completely remove the smell. Using ozone generator from Odorfreemachines.com is one of the most effective methods of permanently removing odors in a short period of time. Unlike common cleaners and deodorizers, an ozone generator doesn’t use chemicals or fragrances to mask odors—it eliminates them. The ozone created by these devices attaches itself to the pollutants that cause odors, whether they are in the air, on surfaces, or in fabrics. Once ozone attaches itself to the source of the odor it uses the process of oxidization to convert the pollutant into an odorless molecule.  An ozone generator can handle a large variety of odor sources, including smoke, mold and mildew, pets, garbage, food, sweat, and construction related smells. Ozone generators are easy to use but only while the space is unoccupied. They are available to meet both residential and commercial needs.

Mold and Mildew

While mold and mildew are most commonly found in dark, damp basements, they can show up in all areas of the house given the right conditions. The bacteria related to mold and mildew doesn’t just create unpleasant odors—it can create health hazards as well. Even the smallest leaks in plumbing or appliances can spur significant mold buildup, often in areas that are hard to see. Mold and mildew are also often the result of excessive moisture that builds from cracks and holes that allow outside air moisture to leak in.

The first step in addressing this problem is to seal any leaks with appropriate sealant in order to prevent further growth. Existing mold and mildew can be killed with a number of specifically designated products, by removing affected areas, or treating the area with diluted ammonia or bleach solutions. If spending hours with chemicals and scrub brush in-hand doesn’t sound appealing, you might want to consider the use of an ozone generator. Ozone generators will kill mold and airborne mold spores while simultaneously removing the unpleasant musty odor that might persist long after the mold has been killed.

Dead Animals

While not the most pleasant topic, even small rodents can leave a lasting foulness when they pass away in or near homes. Perhaps most aggravating of all, animals often expire in hard-to-find places such as in walls, attics, or under the home. Unfortunately getting rid of this odor may require an exhaustive search, as the smell of decomposition can linger for some time. It is advisable to clean and disinfect any area where dead animals are found; always wear gloves for dead animal cleanup, or have a professional take care of it. Use an ozone machine to clear out the smell after the animal has been removed.

Drains

While foul smells from drains are typically easy to find, treating them can be frustrating. Drain related smells can be the result of mineral or debris buildup, clogs, leaks, or sewer gasses. Eliminating the source of problem drain odors can be as simple as pouring a 50/50 solution of bleach and water down the drain, waiting thirty minutes, and then flushing the drain with cool water. A mixture of vinegar and water can be used as well. If odor problems persist one should consult a plumber immediately, as this may be a sign of significant plumbing problems.
